Astro (also known as Astro.js) is an open-source JavaScript web framework used to build fast, content-driven websites. While younger than its peers—first released in 2021—it has proven to be quite popular, growing from 500 GitHub stars in 2020 to over 60,000 today. Astro has released several new versions over the years, and another has just arrived. Introducing Astro 6.0!
Released on March 10, 2026, Astro 6.0 offers several new capabilities. With its built-in Fonts API, it can optimize fonts by downloading or caching local fonts from Google Fonts or Fontsource. Its redesigned Dev Server is built with Vite’s Environment API, allowing an application to run in the same runtime environment as production, thereby reducing local bugs and inconsistencies. Live Content Collections eliminate the need for a full site rebuild when fetching dynamic, up-to-date data at request time. And this is only the beginning of what Astro 6.0 has to offer.
