HTMX 4.0.0, the newest version of HTMX, was released on August 26, 2026. Skipping version 3 (a deliberate move, as the creator had previously stated that such a version would never exist), 4.0.0 represents a major rebuild of the library. For those who are unaware, HTMX is a lightweight, open-source JavaScript library that allows developers to create modern, interactive user interfaces using HTML rather than relying heavily on JavaScript. It extends HTML’s capabilities by allowing elements to use features such as AJAX, CSS transitions, WebSockets, and more without requiring full-page reloads.
HTMX 4.0.0 introduces several new features and changes. For example, explicit attribute inheritence is by default. Before, such attributes were inherited by child elements. With 4.0.0, as per the name, the inheritence is explicit. LocalStorage history caching is obsolte. Instead, hitting the back-button triggers a fresh page re-fresh, preventing a stale state or script breakage. This is just a taste of what’s to come with HTMX 4.0.0s changes.
